I am sorry to hear you are worried about Caine. A positive Lyme disease test may not indicate current infection, just that he has been exposed to Lyme disease at some point. Usually with Lyme disease, we see limping, and fever, not breathing problems. Does he have a a fever?

If you lift his lip to check his gums, are they pink in color or do they seem pale?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

Weakness and panting are not usual symptoms of Lyme disease, so I might be looking for some other cause. However, in some cases Lyme can cause odd symptoms, and some dogs have gotten kidney failure with Lyme disease. If his blood tests showed normal kidney numbers, that is probably not his problem.

Gums are pink
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

If his gums are pink, and he is eating, that is a good sign he is not in immediate danger.

Is he taking antibiotics for the Lyme disease, or the whole body infection?

I gess both ten pills a day for 28days and rimadyl
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

What kind of pills, besides the Rimadyl?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

Are the pills antibiotics? The Rimadyl will help with fever, pain, inflammation.

Omxycycline
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

Doxycycline? Minocycline? These would be used for Lyme disease.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 9 months ago
Doxycycline 100mg
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

How many does he take a day?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 9 months ago
Five twice a day got him on cool patio seems to doing better with panting seem calm
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

That sounds like the right dose, if he has Lyme disease.

Can you take his temperature with a thermometer? Normal is 101.5. F

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 9 months ago
No can't do that
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

If he is breathing better, and eating, he likely does not have a fever.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

If he is weak, or if the breathing gets labored, I would consider a chest Xray.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 9 months ago
Is it just taking time cause he was so infected
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

That is hard to say. Most of the cases of Lyme disease I have treated got better soon after starting treatment. If he is not improving, I might look for another problem. A positive test for Lyme is not necessarily a case of Lyme disease; many dogs that were never sick and were only exposed to Lyme disease will test positive; the test may be a "red herring".

He was sick when I took him to vet
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

How long ago was that; how long has he been getting Doxycycline? If he is on it for a week and not getting better, it is time to look for another diagnosis, or treatment.

It looks like it has been 4 days? I would expect some improvement by now.

Tuesday he perked up for a couple days then got weak again
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

I don't like his being weak. This does not sound like Lyme to me. If he were mine, I would be looking for another reason for the weakness, and examine him and possibly do more tests to find out what is wrong.

Different antibiotics
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

Antibiotics only help with bacterial infections. This might be something else. Just switching antibiotics is not likely to make a difference.

Vet ran all the blood work and everything
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

There is no such thing as "all the blood work"! There are hundreds of blood tests. A basic CBC and chemistry panel is where we usually start, but there are many things that can still wrong even if these blood tests are normal.

And there are tests that are not blood tests, such as X-rays, and ultrasound. I love it when I can diagnose and treat a problem based on my first round of tests, and often I can, but there are cases that are more complicated.
