Customer Question
I have a 10...

I have a 10 year old German short haired pointer. This morning he started vomiting and was drooling. I just noticed a small amount of blood. My daughter said omg yesterday I dropped an aleve and I think he ate it. She said it was only one as there were two in the bottle and she took one.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. The Expert will know if the Pointer will be able to digest that. What is the Pointer's name?

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today.

What does he weigh?

What is he bringing up in his vomit?

Can he keep any water down?

Are his gums pink or white/pale? Moist or sticky?

If you press on his belly, any tensing, tenderness, discomfort, or pain?

Any black stools?

I read that Tagamet can help an upset stomach? I don't know if I should bring him to vet because he ate it almost 18 or more hours ago. Would inducing vomit help now?

He had been drinking a lot of water. Today

Hello again,

Now we do have a serious situation with Dredger.

If he got that Aleve tablet, it is of a dose that can cause GI upset, vomiting, stomach ulcers, and lethargy but furthermore he has had enough that we could see damage to his kidneys (which can appear as excessive thirst followed by dilute voluminous urination days later). So, I have to say that if he did get this we have to tread with care.

At this point we are sadly past a time where we could intervene and prevent absorption. This stage is about damage control. Ideally we'd want him see so his kidneys can be checked and IV fluids given to flush this out and reduce risk. We do use antacids to reduce nausea and stomach ulcer risks but I'd lean to Pepcid (More Info/Dose @http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/famotidine-pepcid) or Zantac (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/ranitidine-hcl-zantac) for him since Tagamet does interact with a lot of drugs and we are going to want his local vet to also start gastroprotectants +/- gut safe pain relief. Whichever you use, we'd give this 20 minutes before food to allow absorption and of course double check with your vet before use if your wee one has any known health issues or is on any medications you haven't mentioned. After the above, we can consider offering a light diet option for a few days. Examples of an easily digestible diet include cooked white rice with boiled chicken, boiled white fish, scrambled egg, or meat baby food (as long as its free from garlic or onion powder). Ideally, we want to offer this as small frequent meals to keep the stomach settled. But again this is a worrying dose he may have had and given how soon his signs appeared after that possible ingestion, I worry he did have it. So, we'd want to use the above to protect his stomach but at a kidney damaging dose we are best to have him seen....especially as I now see he is drinking loads of water and that even more raises worries about harm to those kidneys.

Kind regards,

Dr. B.
