He has an open wound on the top of his paw. Do we need to see our vet or can we clean it and treat it ourselves? Thank you!

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Is the dog bleeding a lot?

No it isn't

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name and age?

Sorry! I got called away from my desk. His name is ***** ***** he is an 11 year old Newfoundland.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Marlowe?

No, he was just there to see her about two weeks ago for a skin rash, but we have treated it with antibiotics and she gave us a spray to use as well as a pill.

It appears to be a clean laceration that would benefit from suturing. You can keep it clean with over the counter chlorhexidine solution (Hibiclens in your local drug store) and it will eventually contract closed - heal by secondary intention - but that can take up to 3 weeks to occur. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
