Customer Question
She has a temp...

She has a temp of 104.4, she has lumps on her shoulders and her hind quarters. Originally thought it was reaction to vaccines she got last month but now she's lethargic, not eating/drinking and has the fever

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the dog?

The vaccines she received were for lepto and lyme

I am sorry to hear you are worried about your dog. How old is she, and what breed of dog?

It would be unusual for a vaccine reaction to happen a month later. Usually they occur within 24 hours.

Where on her hind quarters are the lumps?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 9 months ago
She is a mixed breed. We think pointer/pitbull. She's almost 3 years old and about 50lbs. Her largest lump is on her shoulder blade where she received the lepto vaccine. She now has several lumps over her body. Specifically behind her ribs, even on her lip.
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

This could be an infection, or an allergic reaction. With a fever this high, this could be an emergency. She may need prescription medication.

The best way to tell what the lumps are would be FNA, fine needle aspiration, to get some cells from inside the lumps to stain and examine under a microscope.

If there are more lumps forming, this could be "hives" an allergic reaction, but to something more recent than a month. She should be checked out by a veterinarian with a fever this high, but you could try Benadryl if it is hives. How much does she weigh?

We went to the vet two weeks ago when we first noticed the larger lump. They did a fine needle aspiration then and she said there was nothing of concern enough to send off to a pathologist. We brought her again to the vet last night after noticing her lethargy and non-eating/drinking. They did blood work which we are (impatiently) waiting for the results. We are terrified it is something far more serious like Cancer. She's 50lbs
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

The blood work may be helpful. When will you get the results?

She is young for cancer, but it is not impossible. FNA should tell you if these lumps are cancer.

Is she getting anything for the fever: anti inflammatory medication? Antibiotics?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 9 months ago
They said sometime today we should get the results. Last night they gave her 0.40ml injection of Metacam. The FNA they did two weeks ago showed nothing. Is it possible to show something now?
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

It is possible that another FNA may show something that has changed or was missed the first time, so I would consider doing it again.

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

Metacam should help the fever.

I hope you learn something from the blood tests.

As do I. Waiting by the phone as we speak. She ate some boiled chicken this morning as it seemed her appetite is coming back, which I took to be a good sign. However, she refuses to touch her kibble, Merrick Grain-Free, which she has been eating for over a year now. I'm curious to know if possibly it was an allergy to the food?
Dog Veterinarian: Rebecca, Dog Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

Usually food allergy causes itching of the face, ears, and anus, but not lumps.
