Customer Question
I have a Mini...

I have a Mini pinature, she approximately 11 years old. All her live she has had itchy skin , causing her to chew a bit on her skin - loosing here hair. The Vets give her Cortisone injections but only helps a short time, plus I don't like the side effects of Cortisone. IS there ANYTHING that I can by to help this itch/ bite cycle. Even Benedryl does not help. !!!! Desperate!!!!!

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Using the wrong medication for fleas can be dangerous. You should definitely talk to the Veterinarian. What is the dog's name?

Suse, I don't see flees and she on Trifexis

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

Besides been nervous, she fine. She does have months of normal skin.

I'm sorry to hear that Suse is so uncomfortable with her skin allergies.

Have you tried any oral medication other than Benadryl?

How much does she weigh?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question
Customer reply replied 11 months ago
Only oral medication I have used is Benadryl. Suse weighs 23 pounds
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Denise, Dog Veterinarian replied 11 months ago

There are a few options for control of allergic inflammation and itch. If you have found Benadryl ineffective, it may be beneficial to try a different antihistamine because every pet responds differently to different antihistamines.

At 23lbs, I recommend trying Zyrtec (generic is Ceterizine), 10mg tablets. Give 1 tablet daily for itching and inflammation.

If this does not control her symptoms, I recommend a recheck visit with your veterinarian. Apoquel is a new medication for allergic itching and inflammation. I have seen great results in my patients. Ask your veterinarian if it is an option for Suse.

I wish you both all the best.
