Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today.

How much blood did you see (spoonful, more or less)?

Is he up to date on vaccines?

Can he keep any water down?

Are his gums pink or white/pale? Moist or sticky?

If you press on his belly, any tensing, tenderness, discomfort, or pain?

Could he have eaten anything harmful (ie bones, toys, plants, chemicals, human meds, etc)?

Any black stools?

it was foam with blood about a quarter cup
he is due for lepto and bloodwork for worms
he drinks water like theres no tomorrow since I got him at two months
gums are pale and smooth
he didn't eat anything
belly is fine
normal stool
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. B., Veterinarian replied 11 months ago

Hi again,

A quarter cup of blood or of the foam with blood?

Are those gums paler then usual for him?

Since you mentioned he has always drunk a lot, does he tend to have watery/dilute urine or pass loads when he goes?

foam with blood
yes paler gums
no normal yellow urine but pees like a horse
could the blood be stomach stress cause he hasn't really been eating?
his nose is warmer and dryer than usual too
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. B., Veterinarian replied 11 months ago

Oh dear,

Now if those gums are paler then usual, we need to be careful. To see that and blood means we have to be concerned about internal bleeding, stomach ulcers (which can cause appetite loss and vomiting but also be secondary to appetite loss for other reasons), or possible compromise to the GI circulation ( most often from blockages). There would also be worry of his clotting ability which we can see with some toxins and some heat stroke cases (a worry if he has been overheated). Also we do have to keep bacterial or viral gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, parasites/protozoa infections, or dietary indiscretion in the back of our minds as well.

Now with the paling gums, we'd be safest to have him seen now. That way we can get him assessed for bleeds and heart stroke but also get him onto gastroprotectants, appetite stimulants and injectable anti-vomiting medication. Any delay and you can try an OTC pet safe antacid [ie Pepcid (More Info/Dose @http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/famotidine-pepcid), Zantac (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/ranitidine-hcl-zantac),Tagamet (More Info/Dose Here @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/cimetidine-hcl-tagamet)]. Whichever you choose, we’d give this 20 minutes before offering food to allow absorption. Of course, do double check with your vet if he has a known health issues or is on any medications you haven't mentioned. Though if he cannot keep it down due to nausea, that is usually a red flag that we need to bypass his mouth with injectable anti-vomiting medication from his vet.

Afterwards, you can consider starting small frequent meals of an easily digestible diet like cooked white rice with boiled chicken, boiled white fish, cottage cheese, scrambled eggs, or meat baby food (as long as its garlic/onion free). There are also OTC vet diets that can be used (ie Hill’s I/D or Royal Canin’s sensitivity) too. The aim of these diets is that they will be better tolerated/absorbed by the compromised gut. Therefore, it should get more nutrients in and result in less GI upset. As long as improvement is being seen, I usually advise continuing this until signs are settled, and then weaning slowly back to your normal diet.

Overall, his signs do raise some concerns here. And with those pale gums especially we do have to tread with care and would be best having him seen now. Any delay and we’d want to start supportive care to settle his stomach. If he doesn’t respond to the above within 12-24 hours; then we'd want to get his vet to assess him and start injectable anti-vomiting medication appetite stimulants, gastroprotectants, +/- antibiotics to settle his stomach, and get him back feeling like himself.

Kind regards,

Dr. B.
