My dog had vomited 3 times earlier today. She vomited

Customer Question
My dog had vomited...

My dog had vomited 3 times earlier today. She vomited undigested food so I figure I would starve her for 12 hours. She is drinking water, and now she's hungry. She bugging me and crying for food. Should I go ahead and feed her a small meal of bland chicken and rice. It hasn't been 12 hours/ It's more like 6 hours since her last vomit.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did your dog eat anything unusual?

I couldn't tell from what she threw up. Maybe pears but she's eaten that before as a treat. Sometimes she'd sneak a pear that dropped from my pear tree but she hasn't done that because I would give it to her as a treat.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name?

Britainey

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Britainey?

She went for her check up in April 2017. Vet said she looked fine.

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today. I do apologize that your question was not answered before. Different experts come online at various times; I just came online, read about your wee one’s situation, and wanted to help.

Again I do apologize that my colleagues could not aid you sooner, but wanted to touch base with you about Britainey.

If she hasn't vomited in a few hours, you are fine to try her signs a small bland meal. Rice with chicken is a good option or other proteins we can use include cottage cheese, boiled white fish, scrambled egg, or meat baby food (as long as its free from garlic or onion powder). Ideally, we want to offer this as small frequent meals to keep the stomach settled. Though if you think she is still a bit unsettled in her stomach you can first plan to treat with an OTC antacid like Pepcid (More Info/Dose @http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/famotidine-pepcid) or Zantac (More Info/Dose @ http://www.petplace.com/article/drug-library/library/over-the-counter/ranitidine-hcl-zantac). Whichever you use, we'd give this 20 minutes before food to allow absorption and of course double check with your vet before use if your wee one has any known health issues or is on any medications you haven't mentioned. And as long as she remains settled, we are happy. Though if she were to vomit again, then we may need a check to make sure she hasn't picked up a gut infection or eaten anything of worry.

Kind regards,

Dr. B.
