Customer Question
My dog is pregnant...

My dog is pregnant around the 46th day and I found some mucus and thin liquid blood on the kitchen floor. Should I be worried??

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. The Expert will know what to do about this bleeding. I'll connect you ASAP. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about your dog?

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. May I have an update on your male, please?

While bloody diarrhea (melena) is an important sign, it's not pathognomonic (specifically indicative) of any one particular disorder. In the minature breeds, however, the potentially dangerous canine hemorrhagic gastroenteritis - perhaps better called acute hemorrhagic diarrhea syndrome (AHDS) describes dogs with the acute onset of hemorrhagic diarrhea with or without vomiting. This syndrome has numerous potential causes, although an underlying cause is often not identified. In one study, affected dogs were significantly younger (median age of 4.2 years) and weighed less (median weight 26 lbs) than the general hospital population. Predisposed breeds were Yorkshire terrier, miniature Doberman pinscher, miniature Schnauzer, miniature poodle, and Maltese dogs. Both infectious (giardia, parvovirus, coronavirus, circovirus, Clostridium perfringes, Clostridium difficile, Campylobacter, Salmonella) and non-infectious (pancreatitis, Addison's disease, e.g.) causes are considered.
