Customer Question
Hello, my dachshund/pom mix...

Hello, my dachshund/pom mix (5 years old) has reoccurring spots of inflammation then it ruptures into a abscess and leaks. They heal then come back in same spots then spreads. He has been to my regular vet and an emergency vet and they found the lumps to just be inflammation.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Some lumps are serious and some aren't. Let's see what the Veterinarian has to say. What is the dachshund's name and age?

Beardog and he is about 5

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Beardog?

Originally when he got sick he lost use of his beg leg, that came back in about 3 days, plus he had an infection in his eye and lost all his hair around the eye, it grew back but his eye drains a clear river of fluid. My vet had no idea. The ER vet thought he had cancer and reversed that diagnosis. They said something about his protein but I am not clear on that. He was very very sick and didn't get out of bed for several weeks and is starting to feel real bad again. He has two/three abscesses now and 2 lumps that should abscess soon. He really doesn't feel good. I have spent over $2000 with no answers.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. You appear to be describing one of the autoimmune /immune-mediated skin disorders such as sterile nodular panniculitis or idiopathic sterile granuloma and pyogranuloma. These are best clarified with cytology and excisional biopsies. It isn't clear to me what "...found the lumps to just be inflammation" implies. These conditions cause inflammation and my pathologist can suggest which disorder is most likely after determining the type of inflammation present. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Is there medication to help this condition?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 9 months ago

Yes, both conservative therapy in the form of essential fatty acids, vitamin E, tetracycline or doxycycline + niacinamide, and cyclosporine and more reliably effective treatments but with more adverse effects such as the glucocorticoids (steroids) prednisone, dexamethasone, or chemotherapeutic drugs such as azathioprine, chlorambucil, and dapsone are prescribed. The prognosis can be good but treatments may be lengthy and in some patients lifelong. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
