Customer Question
Hello. He is having...

Hello. He is having back pain and anxiety. I have a Tramadol from a prescription previously. I was wondering if I could cut one in half or mash it up, or do I have to administer the whole pill at once (50 mg tab)? Thanks!

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Is the dog bleeding a lot?

No bleeding.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the dog's name and age?

Lobo. 13 & 3/4 years. He slipped the other day and today he won't let me touch his back. Is getting around a little but is twitching and whimpering which he never does (high tolerance to pain his whole life). Any thoughts?

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Lobo?

He's been very healthy his whole life. Has had some anxiety earlier this year due to a smoke alarm going off at night. I have medication for that but am wondering if I can give him the tramadol as well. The Vet is impressed with his heart and lung power. Says he is like an pro-athlete! Sad to see him hurting....

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Tramadol can be broken unless it's in the extended release form which could potentially overdose a patient if the tablet is broken or chewed. Dosing is recommended at 2 - 5 mg per pound of body weight at up to every 8 hour intervals. It's best to inititate dosing in the low range and increase if need be. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
