He drank bailey's irish...

He drank bailey's irish cream with milk....not showing any signs of sickness....

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What seems to be the problem with the dog?

He drank about 6 oz of bailey's irish cream with a little milk...should I be concerned? he's lying down at my feet as usual when I'm at the computer. he also ate the triscuits that i had next to the drink.

Veterinarian's Assistant: The Expert will know if the dog will be able to digest that. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?

He's a cockapoo, 32 lbs, 6 years old

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

Bailey's contains 17% alcohol which is equivalent to 170 mg of ethanol per mL.

There are 180 mL in 6 ounces.

He ingested 180 mL x 170 mg/mL = 30,600 mg (30.6 g) of ethanol. It takes 2.3 - 2.7 g/lb of body weight to be lethal in adult humans and half that amount in pediatrics.

32 lbs x 2.3 g/lb = 74 g of ethanol to be lethal in a 32 lb dog and so he should remain safe... albeit somewhat "drunk". May I have an update on him, please?

he drank quite a bit of water when I prompted him to....he sat up a few times while I was petting him...that's normal...he's acting like his normal tired self at this time of night...he responds quickly to his name...he's wagging his tail and walked to me when I told him to....I think he's ok....

Thank you. It takes 1.4 g/lb to be toxic in very young children. We don't have studies of toxicity in dogs. Remarkably, he doesn't appear affected and he would by now because ethanol is rapidly absorbed. I can't set a follow-up in this venue so please return to our conversation - even after rating - with an update at your convenience. You can bookmark this page for ease of return.
