How can I find a vet who will soften a sheltie's bark?

Veterinarian's Assistant: What sort of animal are we talking about?

Shetland sheepdog

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. I'll do all I can to help. What is wrong with the sheepdog?

Sharp,frequent barking--common among shelties

Veterinarian's Assistant: Where does the sheepdog seem to hurt?

No pain--just the barking

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the sheepdog's name and age?

Teddy, age 4

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Teddy?

No--a great dog, but the barking is excessive--I have had a sheltie whose bark was softened and much more liveable, and his personality was wonderful

Hi JaCustomer,

Welcome to Just Answer. My name is Jane. I have been involved professionally with dogs in the healthcare and behavioral fields for over 20 years. I’ve worked as a Vet Assistant and Behaviorist and have extensive experience in dog reproduction, as a breeder, for even longer than that.. Canine behavioral issues and training are also my specialties. It will be my pleasure to work with you today.

It is necessary for me to get a little information from you before I can type up your reply. It may also take me time to find a vet who will do that. Your patience is appreciated.

Can you give me your zip code and how far you are willing to travel?

Also if you are interested in training techniques to help stop excessive barking?

He has a swollen toe, shetland sheepdog, Prince. Hes 12, he
he had a plasma cell tumor removed 2 years ago from his back left leg 5th digit. He is followed for it by our vet and an oncologist and that has remained stable. He went to the vet 2 days ago to have his naila trimmed and paws cleaned up and when we got home that night he started limping and wouldn't weoght bare on it. His other paws were evedentally sore too but not so bad. She didnt cut the quick except for his front right which isnt the problem paw. i took him back to the vet today and his back left paw has a swollen toe his 4th digit. It is red and slightly swollen and sore to touch but he is weight baring better on it now but still not back to normal. The vet doeant think its from his nail cutting but he was fine before. She did an xray that just showed soft tissue swelling the bone was ok. There is no dischare and he is not licking it. Should i be worried this is somethinf onco related? we just had his lymph nodes aspirated proximal to this paw causw e grew back his 5th pad but its a pressure point. Both the onco and vet monitor it and it hasnt increased in size. i just dont know wherw he could get an infection out od nowherw if it wasnt from the nail cutting....… read more
