Customer Question

Hi Pearl! I came home half an hour ago to find that my dog (12 year old Pomeranian mix, 13 lbs.) got into my bag and ate three meal replacement bars (one has cocoa as the 7th ingredient), some of a package of hot cocoa mix (looks like most of it got on the carpet), and a little bit of dried mashed potato mix. I don't think she got all that much chocolate, but the meal replacements are fortified with vitamins and minerals. I'm going to keep an eye on her tonight and see how she's doing.
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. The Expert will know if your dog will be able to digest that. What is the dog's name?
Customer: Yah, me too, thanks! Her name is*****: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Penny?
Customer: She's healthy overall. Her usual diet is Hill's k/d. She's had elevated kidney levels in the past, but nothing overly concerning.

Hi Dr. Rawling,
This was around 9:30 yesterday evening. I kept a close eye on Penny last night, no gastric issues or vomiting. She seems fine this morning.

Thanks for getting back to me.

The meal replacement bars should pose no significant problem. You may see signs of vomiting or diarrhea developing over the next day or so, however these should be transient in nature. It would be wise to feed a light diet, such as plain boiled chicken and rice, a little scrambled egg, plain white fish or light cottage cheese for the next few days to ensure things are remaining settled.
