My german shepherd who is almost 12 has had a stiff neck off…

Customer Question
Hi my german shepherd...

Hi my german shepherd who is almost 12 has had a stiff neck off and on over the past year or two and it's happening more frequently where he can't turn his head in a certain direction. Is there something I can give him to help with the pain?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the German shepherd's name?

Lobo

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Lobo?

No he hasn't had any other problems. He doesn't like going to the vet though

I'm sorry to hear of this with Lobo. As for over the counter analgesia, you’re necessarily constrained to either aspirin dosed at 10 mg per pound of body weight (22 mg per kg of body weight) with food at 12 hour intervals or acetaminophen (Tylenol, e.g.) dosed at 7 mg per pound of body weight (15 mg per kg of body weight) thrice daily. Acetaminophen isn’t antiinflammatory as is aspirin, however. You must avoid the toxic ibuprofen and naproxen in dogs. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Is this old age do you think or could there be another reason that he should be seen for?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Michael Salkin, Veterinarian replied 8 months ago

These cervical (neck) disorders, e.g., degenerative disk disease (a "slipped disk") or spondylomyelopathy ("wobblers") are more common at Lobo's age but not all older dogs suffer from these disorders. If you didn't see a positive response to over the counter analgesics, his vet can prescribe more potent nonsteroidal antinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as carprofen, meloxicam, or grapiprant +/- a narcotic analgesic such as tramadol +/- a skeletal muscle relaxant such as methocarbamol or diazepam. Please continue our conversation if you wish.
