Customer Question

My dog had a seizure yesterday and today and now his nose is bleeding. Should I be concerned?
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. Seizures always look scary. Let's get you talking to the Veterinarian. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about your dog?
Customer: He has recently started having the seizures. He takes Keppra for them but it's not helping. He has had 8 since July 20th. He's a 2yr old lab

hello
Expert:  Dr Aaron replied 1 month ago.

How old was your dog when he started having seizures?

How much Keppra does he take? How often? Is it the extended release (XR) Keppra?

Is he on any other medication currently?

Is his nose still bleeding?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
He started taking Keppra 1500 mg 2 times a day. they are the extended release tablets. 750mg each
He is 2 yrs old and just started with them on July 20th and he started taking the Keppra a few days later. His first seizure was a grand mal seizure. He had bw done but it didn't show anything
He's sleeping, I don't think his nose is bleeding any more

How much does he weigh?

How many seizures has he had since the beginning of August?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
He weighs 85 lbs. He has had 4 since August. His first 4 were from 7/20-7/29.
He always has a seizure and then the next day he will have another one.

I'm not worried about nose bleeding if it has stopped.

2 or more seizures per month is usually the threshold at which we will consider adding an additional anti-seizure medication (such as Phenobarbital, Potassium Bromide, Zonisamide).

I would consider talking to your local vet about the possibility of adding an additional medication.

Is there anything else I can help you with this evening?

If the nose bleed starts again should I be concerned or is this something that happens with dogs that have seizures
Expert:  Dr Aaron replied 1 month ago.

It can happen with seizures if they hit their head on the ground...otherwise it shouldn't occur. If the bleeding continues then I would take him to your local vet for an exam but I wouldn't expect it to continue to occur.
