My dogs were last fed at noon today and I worked a longer

Customer Question

My dogs were last fed at noon today and I worked a longer shift than I was supposed to and got home later and didn't have time to get them food. Can they go until the morning to eat? It'll be about 20 hours without food, but they got about 2 cups today.

Hello, I'm Dr. Kara. I have over 20 years of experience as a veterinarian and I'd like to help. Please give me a moment to review your concerns.

Expert:  Dr. Kara replied 1 month ago.

I'm sure your pups won't be happy but if they are otherwise healthy adult dogs a longer than usual time between feedings, 20 hours in this case, should not be a problem. We routinely have owners food fast their dogs before surgery or for blood draws for 12-24 hours. Healthy, adult dogs have reserves to draw on and should be fine.

Of course make sure that they have plenty of water to maintain hydration.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Should I be worried about them trying to eat anything in the house? I'm concerned when I crate them for bed that they will get hungry and try and eat their blanket or something. Should this be a concern or should they be okay?

They also have food allergies and environmental allergies so have been on meds, don't know if this makes a difference or not.

If they aren't normally chewers I would not expect them to try to eat nonfood items.

I don't think food or environmental allergies will affect them not being fed.

Would it be okay if I picked up some patties from like McDonald's or something to hold them over? I know it's not preferable but I feel bad
Expert:  Dr. Kara replied 1 month ago.

If anything I would make them a bland diet mix of 1/3 boiled, lean hamburger or boiled, white, skinless chicken, all fats and juices drained from the meat, and 2/3 boiled, plain white rice or well cooked pasta.

Fast food hamburgers are too greasy for their stomachs.

Okay I will see if I can get out to the grocery store, if not it will be okay for them to wait?
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
It's 12am here so they would only have to wait another 8 hours or so
Expert:  Dr. Kara replied 1 month ago.

Yes, if you cannot get out tonight they will be fine until tomorrow morning, hungry, but no long term harm done!

Ok thank you!

You are very welcome, have a good night.

Is it okay if they drink some water before they go in their crate? How long can they go without water and food? Is 7 hours okay?
Expert:  Dr. Kara replied 1 month ago.

Water is fine before they go in their crate, but if they are sleeping and it isn't overly hot where you are they aren't likely to need a drink or miss having water for 8 hours or so.

And while 2-3 meals a day is best, ***** ***** are sleeping overnight they won't feel too hungry and should be fine until morning.

I'm signing off for the evening. Your pups should be just fine until you can get food in the morning or make them some homemade bland diet mix to eat.
