My 15 lb chihuahua ate a half a bag of macadamia this

Customer Question

My 15 lb chihuahua ate a half a bag of macadamia nuts this morning when we were out of the room briefly. Now she is lethargic and shaking. My husband gave her activated charcoal and tried to give her hydrogen peroxide to make her vomit, but she would not take it. Will she be ok after the activated charcoal? Please advise. Thank you.

Macadamia nut toxicity is a strange one in that all dogs recover within 24-48 hours whether treated or not. Hindlimb weakness - rarely generalized weakness, mild tremor of hindlimbs, ataxia ("drunken sailor"), depression, vomiting, and hyperthermia (due to muscle tremor, nor true fever) are expected. Activated charcoal isn't recommended because the benefit is very limited and risks aspiration due to vomiting. A warm water enema can help move the macadamia nuts more quickly through the GI tract. This is best performed by an attending vet, however. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
