We just brought a...

We just brought a young dog home from the shelter today. He is very thin - they said he has gained weight since he has been there. He has started yelping in pain when he gets up from laying down. He has also yelped when walking over the threshold to go outside. He took a good 10 minutes to poop this afternoon. Not sure what is going on.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Could be a lot of things that cause lethargy. The Expert will know how to help the dog. What is the dog's name and age?

It's not lethargy - it's yelping in pain. We're calling him Luke. I don't know how old he is - he's not fully grown. Less than a year, I think.

One more thing. He WAS scooting across the floor this afternoon, so maybe this has something to do with anal glands? Could that cause the yelping?

Luke's pain/discomfort could all be from his anal glands. Other potential causes of his pain; hips, low back, knees, kidneys, bladder, digestive tract, other.Use a shower, kitchen sink, or garden hose to gently do Hydro Therapy on Luke's anal glands, a soft shower or mist for 5-10 minutes 3-4 times day until you can get Luke to a veterinarian. If he gets worse please go to an after hours animal emergency clinic. The water will flush the area & help with inflammation & pain.Feed Luke canned food with pumpkin pie filling for fiber, add water to make it soupy.

We didn't receive your response until just now. He seems better this morning. Has only yelped once - while sitting. Otherwise, he seems better.

Understand, the time zones make for large variations on time.Give home TLC, canned food with pumpkin, & watch videos on expressing anal glands, The scooting is a + sign the glands are bothersome. It's a stinky process, wear gloves, do outside.

We took him to the vet. He has a significant leg injury, probably from being picked up by animal control. You did the best you could with the info provided. There's nothing wrong with his anal glands.
