I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Coughing and gagging can represent a simple respiratory infection such as infectious tracheobronchitis ("kennel cough") or severe life-threatening cardiopulmonary disorders such as congestive heart failure, heartworm disease, chronic sterile bronchitis, or neoplasia in the chest cavity. If my patient were exposed to other dogs within the incubation period of 3-10 days for the kennel cough complex, I might be patient and allow the tincture of time to resolve the infection within 1-3 weeks. If there had been no exposure to other dogs, I need to consider the more serious causes of coughing and gagging and carefully auscultate (listen to) and X-ray my patient's thorax (chest). Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
