My 2.5 year old Mini Australian Shepherd has licked a spot…

Customer Question
My 2.5 year old...

My 2.5 year old Mini Australian Shepherd has licked a spot about the size of a nickle to where there is no hair. It's not bleeding or red or anything. Just bald. Any ideas what is happening? She is also shedding a lot of hair right now. I heard this is common every couple years?

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. The Expert will know if the Australian Shepherd will be able to digest that. What is the Australian Shepherd's name?

Started about a week ago.
It's on her back.
She's not itchy. But is shedding a lot right now. We have brushed her several times and can fill up a wal mart sack
Doesn't seem to be itchy.
No medical conditions.
We do have a new puppy Australian shepherd that is about 4 months old but he seems very healthy.
I've attached a picture of the spot.

Friend, it appears that she has what we commonly call a hotspot which is an area of inflammation made worse by excessive licking. As far as the shedding it could be because of the season. This is what you can do:

1- Need to stop her from licking or she is going to delay healing. Pick up an E collar (cone) in your local pet store to stop her from licking/gnawing the affected area.

2- Pick up in your local pharmacy "Hibiclens" antimicrobial soap or chlorhexiderm scrub. Wash area with this soap 2-3 times a day. If you do not find the above soap use over the counter antibacterial soap.

3- After washing affected area as above apply a topical cortisone cream. Do this 2 times a day for the next 7-10 days. You can buy this over the counter in any pharmacy.

4- Supplement with Omega-3 fatty acids; this will help with the shedding and inflammation. You can buy this over the counter at any pet store; give at label dose.

5- If no significant improvement after doing the above in 1-2 days follow up with your family veterinarian for a hands-on examination.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service. If you have any follow-up questions don't hesitate to ask. If finished, please take a moment to rate my service. See you again soon!
