Our 1.5 year old Pomsky (2nd. Gen) stopped eating suddenly…

Customer Question
Our 1.5 year old...

Our 1.5 year old Pomsky (2nd. Gen) stopped eating suddenly about a week ago. We took him to our local vet and they identified High Calcium. He is on fluid therapy and we are being sent today to an internal medicine specialist to rule out parathyroidism...if this is the issue, what is the course of treatment? Really concerned here...he has had little food in over three days...only IV fluids.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'll do all I can to help. What sort of animal are we talking about?

Canine-Pomsky (50% Husky 50% Pomeranian)

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the husky?

No...he's about 1.5 years old and was healthy until about a week ago when he lost his appetite and started acting lethargic

The most common cause of parathyroid disease is a solitary parathyroid adenoma (tumor) Parathyroid carcinomas and parathyroid adenomatous hyperplasia can also cause this disease but Usually a solitary nodule is found but approximately 10% of affected patients have bilateral disease (tumors on both glands)

Treatment will depend on if there is a tumor and what type it ends up being. There are surgical and radiation and ablation type treatments available depending on what what we are dealing with.

Prognosis is generally very good with appropriate therapy. No significant difference has been found in median duration of control of hypercalcemia between parathyroidectomy (removal of the tumor and gland) (561 days), percutaneous ultrasound-guided heat ablation (581 days), and percutaneous ultrasound-guided ethanol ablation (540 days).3 Metastasis is uncommon at the time of diagnosis for parathyroid carcinomas.

He may need some additional diagnostics at the internal medicine specialists to get this fully diagnosed and get a treatment that works for him.

Generally if there is removal or treatment of one or more of his glands periodic blood work will bee needed to monitor his calcium levels.
