Seizures. He has had about 7 or 8 since 10 pm last night. They are now about 1 every hour. He has been on Phenobarb for about 2 years and this is only the 3rd time he has had seizures since he was diagnosed. He weighs 42 lbs and is taking 1/2 gr twice day. This is the first time the seizures have not stopped. It's Sunday and no vet available as we live way out in the country

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. What sort of animal are we talking about?

Chow shepherd mix

Veterinarian's Assistant: OK. Seizures always look scary. Let's get you talking to the Veterinarian. What is the chow's name?

Brian

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Brian?

He is about 12 years old (We got him as a 6 month old stray

I'm sorry to hear of this with Brian. He's clustering (more than one seizure in a 24 hour period) and that can presage status epilepticus - the state in which seizure activity doesn't abate unless I heavily sedate or anesthetize my patient. I understand your logistical constraints, however. In this case it would be prudent to dose Brian with 1 1/2 grains (97 mg) at this time and again in 12 hours or until he can see his vet. He's likely to become quite sedate and ataxic ("drunken sailor") but if we can't stop these seizures he's likely to be lost within one of them or, at least, suffer irreversible brain damage. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
