When did the coughing start? Is she coughing up any fluid? Has he had a chest x-ray yet?

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

A few months, but seems to be worsening... no coughing up of fluids.. no chest x-ray, just a hand-fell examination from a local veterinarian.
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. Gabby, Dog Veterinarian replied 4 months ago

Okay I am pretty concerned about the coughing and out of breath and exercise intolerance.

Those can be signs of heart failure. So I really think he needs to have a chest x-ray to take a look at the size of his heart and to see if there is any fluid in his lungs. If there is, there are medication to remove the fluid from his lungs which would help him breathe. There are also medications to help his heart work more effectively. That would make him more comfortable.

If he has not been on heartworm prevention every month he could also have heartworms.

This would be more serious but he could also have a mass or tumor in his chest that is taking up room and making it difficult for his heart to pump and for his lungs to function.

I was thinking it could also be pnuemonia but that would not go on for months.

Does that help? So you see why needs a chest x-ray to rule out these possible causes? Do you have any other questions for me?
