I am a nurse and my dog has a bite - her muzzle is swollen

Customer Question

I am a nurse and my dog has a bite - her muzzle is swollen and a bit firm. I gave her 50 of benadryl and 20 of pred - now needing to find out dosing for bactracillin. There are 300000 units per mL. Dog weighs about 60 lbs (probably closer to 65-67). Do I give subcu or IM?
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. Strange behavior is often perplexing. I'm sure the Veterinarian can help you. What is the dog's name and age?
Customer: Bella, 8 years. Blue tick coon.
JA: What is the dog's name?
Customer: Bella.
JA: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Bella?
Customer: she does have IMHA and in remission for 4 years thank you

Bactracillin (procaine penicillin G) can be given at 10,000 units per pound of body weight subcutaneously once or twice daily. 2 mL twice daily would be my preference repeated for a minimum of 5 days. If your dog were bitten by another animal, prednisone should be avoided and Benadryl would be unnecessary. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
