Customer Question

My 13 year old miniature poodle has been hacking and coughing up foam and clear fluid for about an hour. He does not have any interactions with other dogs at all. Just ate some kibble, but just seems so miserable ūüė•
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. The Veterinarian will know if the miniature poodle will be able to digest that. What is the miniature poodle's name?
Customer: Charlie
JA: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Charlie?
Customer: He's a rescue, but we've had him fir 3 years. He dies seem a bit bloated. Not suddenly, just maybe gotten fat over the past 2 months?

1- Is he lethargic?

2- Any pre existing medical conditions?

3- How much does he weigh?

4- Any other symptoms?

5- Can you take a look at his gums and see if they are pink or pale?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
He's calm, not abnormally lethargic

Ok thank you. He has calmed down now, but it went on for over an hour. We are worried.

Friend, hacking/coughing can be caused by many different medical conditions. Unfortunately, I will not be able to pinpoint the exact underlying cause without a hands-on examination, I am sorry. But, common causes are respiratory infections, a collapsing trachea, heart/lung disease, etc. to name a few causes. If it came on quickly and he is better now it could even be debris/dust in the upper airway that he was clearing. I would keep an eye on him for the night, if the hacking continues I would start him on Robitussin DM (cough) 1/2 teaspoon every 6-8 hours and follow up with your family veterinarian for a hands-on examination in the morning. Symptoms that would require an ER vet visit are lethargy, pale gums, weakness, difficulty breathing, etc.

My goal is to provide you with excellent service. If you have any follow-up questions don't hesitate to ask. If finished, please take a moment to rate my service. See you again soon!
