My dog has been excessively drooling for the past 4 hours but seems fine otherwise. She was "catching" water from the hose for about an hour prior to that

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. The Veterinarian will know what to do with the drooling. What is the dog's name and age?

Monroe, she is 5

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Monroe?

It was very hot outside today. She just had her checkup a month ago and is in perfect health

Ask Your Own Dog Veterinary Question

I am so sorry to hear your pet is showing these symptoms tonight...

The primary cause of drooling and licking lips is nausea in dogs. Other possible causes include an abscessed tooth, a foreign body such as a stick in the mouth, a mass orally, or ingesting something that is bitter or caustic.

So in this situation the ideal thing is to treat as if it it nausea because it is the most readily treatable condition and if there is no change in the next 12 hours a veterinary exam is warranted to determine the underlying cause and begin appropriate treatment. There is a possibility that ingesting a lot of water has caused an upset stomach and the increased salivation

- Pepcid (famotidine) 0.25 mg/ pound every 12 hours which is for nausea and stomach acid buildup
- Take a nice long walk which increases gi motility, reduces abdominal cramping and nausea but please no grass eating
- No dinner if you have not already fed to allow the symptoms to subside without introducing anything orally that might result in progression to vomiting
- Water only in moderation
- In the morning small frequent meals of a bland diet of white rice and lean boiled meat such as chicken

Indications your dog should be seen by a veterinary er sooner include: sticky gums that are pale, yellow, blue, purple, temperature rectally >103.5, progressive lethargy with less responsiveness to you, vomiting or diarrhea that includes blood, resting respiratory rate (breaths per minute) >60, swollen abdomen.

I hope this information makes sense but please let me know how else I can assist you both today!

I think it may have been a LOT of water consumption. I fed her dinner about 2 hours ago. She's just tired now. Thank u!!

My dogs used to stand in front of the house and fill their stomach with the water so I understand how that goes!

Please let me know if I can be of any further assistance to you both today

If the information I have provided was helpful I would be grateful if you would rate our chat with the stars at the top of the screen so I am compensated for my time. Thank you and best of luck to you both, truly!
