Ask a Dog Vet and Get Answers to Your Dog Health Questions
Hello, I'm Dr. Kara. I have over 20 years of experience as a veterinarian and I'd like to help. Please give me a moment to review your concerns.
Dr. Bruce is no online at the present. Would you like to wait for him, in which case I can opt out, or I can help out and answer your question about ham bones.
Just let me know what you would like.
Ham is quite rich and fatty and a dietary switch to a rich food like that alone can lead to gastrointestinal upset and sometimes pancreatitis.
Eating a bone can lead to gastrointestinal irritation, perforations and/or a blockage and a hard bone can cause tooth chips and fractures.
I do not recommend feeding dogs bones.
There are safer things to satisfy the need to chew, like kong balls with treats put inside them or USA manufactured rawhide if your pup isn't an aggressive chewer that swallows big chunks.
Please let me know if you have any further questions.
