Customer Question
Dexter is a 75-79...

Dexter is a 75-79 black & tan hound/husky mix. Very agile/lean muscular build. He is having problems with his left rear leg after we go for two mile/run walks twice a week. That is after cutting it down from three times a week. He is ten years old. His dog food (Diamond Natural) has the requisite amount of glucosamine for his joints. This has been going on for a month now and is just getting worse. I cannot get into his vet for three weeks. I was wondering if anything I can give him for pain. The problem seems to be in his hip.

Veterinarian's Assistant: I'm sorry to hear that. Is the hound bleeding a lot?

No bleeding. Just uses three legs for two days, then seems to just about heal when we go for a run/walk.

Veterinarian's Assistant: What is the hound's name?

Dexter.

Veterinarian's Assistant: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about Dexter?

Only that he is just as tall as a blood hound, and is muscular/lean and can run when first gets to park but then is walking/trotting whereas he played more with his sister, another hound mix.

What you are describing sounds like he may have a partial tear of his anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. I suspect only a partial tear, because the lameness occurs only with activity (correct me if I am wrong). Given his age, there is always the possibility of osteoarthritis in his hips. I have a few recommendations until you can get in to see your local vet. I would start him on omega 3 fatty acids (vet one omega, welactin or GNC brand triple fish). Omega 3 fatty acids are a potent anti-inflammatory. You want to monitor his stools initially to make sure that he can tolerate the higher doses required to help with joints. If you post his weight I can tell you how much EPA/DHA he would need to get the full joint benefit.

Many times the glucosamine found in the diets is not enough to help older animals with pain. Glucosamine is more to protect the joints from degradation (if possible). There are also some herbal supplements that appear to be very helpful. One that I really like for dogs is Dasaquin Advanced. I will post links to these to help you get started. Please ask any follow up questions.

I apologize, it looks I forgot that the Dasaquin Advanced is only available from a veterinary hospital. They have regular Dasaquin available online. It does not have the exact same ingredients. They added turmeric (potent anti inflammatory) and some other herbals to improve the formula. Here is the link to the regular Dasaquin.

So his dose of the omega 3's based on 75 # would be: approximately 4300 mg of combined DHA and EPA. You want to start with about half that dose for a week and if he is not having diarrhea, then increase to the full amount. It is very safe, but some dogs have diarrhea.
