Customer Question

My ten-year-old poodle bichon mix dog had a green discharge from her anal glands when they were expressed at the Groomer's today. What dose of augmentin should I give her and also should I apply Neosporin exterior
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the poodle's name?
Customer: Chloe
JA: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about Chloe?
Customer: No, she is otherwise healthy and just was at the veterinarian for her rabies shot last week. She was going to be traveling so she received an examination for her travel papers

Hi this is Dr. Hill. It does sound like Chloe has an infection in her anal glands. I would not apply anything externally. The dose for augmenting is 22 mg/kg by mouth twice daily. It can cause some gastrointestinal upset, so give it with food. Ideally, she should also be on a probiotics like Proviable or Fortiflora while she is on the antibiotics, to help prevent bacteria. Please ask any follow up questions. You can continue posting on this thread for several days after rating my response. Take care

Could you email a prescription for 22 mg of Augmentin? I have pills , but they are way too big !

It is illegal to prescribe medications for an animal that I have not evaluated, so this would not be possible. Have you contacted you local veterinarian?
