JA: I'll do all I can to help. What is the matter with your dog?
Customer: they are 100mg tablets in half so 50 each one i guess and he is 57 pounds
JA: Where does your dog seem to hurt?
Customer: he doesnt yet he seems normal
JA: OK. No obvious pain. Can you see anything that looks wrong or different?
Customer: no he seems fine this just happened though
JA: Is your dog eating normally?
Customer: it just happened he ate his dinne before the incident dinner*
JA: OK, abnormal eating. The veterinarian will know if your dog will be able to digest that. What is the dog's name?
Customer: hulk
JA: Is there anything else the veterinarian should be aware of about hulk?
Customer: he was just neutered but everything else is normal

Please give me a moment to calculate the exposure dose so I can make appropriate recommendations. How long ago did he eat the rimadyl?

Expert:  Dr. Ellie replied 10 months ago.

Ok, thank you for your patience. based on the estimate of 5 halves left in the bottle your dog ate about 10mg/kg. In an otherwise healthy dog, we typically think of doses of 20 mg/kg as causing GI ulceration, and doses of 40 mg/kg required to see kidney injury. However, in older or already ill dogs, we can see these things occur at lower doses, especially if he has renal disease.

If he is young and healthy, he will likely be fine and may experience some transient GI discomfort but he shouldn't have any long term effects from a single overdose this size.

Did I manage to address your concerns tonight?
