Dog's belly looks distended - "inflated" like a balloon.

Customer Question

Dog's belly looks distended - "inflated" like a balloon. She's been heaving like she was going to vomit all night, but whatever came up (mucus? ), she just swallowed.
Vet's offices are all closed, including emergency vet.
She has cancer, early kidney and liver failure. On k/d science diet, softened in low sodium chicken broth.
Anything I can do for her tonight?

Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you with today. I do apologize that your question was not answered before. Different experts come online at various times; I just came online, read about your wee one’s situation, and wanted to help.

Again I do apologize that my colleagues could not aid you sooner, but can you tell me:

How long has she been like this?

Does her belly feel fluidy or firm?

Where is her cancer?

Are her gums pink or pale/white?

Any changes to her breathing?

Customer: replied 11 months ago.
She was like that for about 3 hours.
Her belly felt firm but hollow, like a drum.
She had mast cell carcenoma (sp?) - started as skin cancer, then spread throughout her body.
Her gums were OK - pinkish.
Her breathing was heavy, since she kept trying to vomit.
I did finally find a 24 hour vets office; she had bloat. With all of her complications, they recommended euthanasia. She passed away just after 4 AM.

Hello again,

I am very sorry to hear that bloat was confirmed and she has passed, but it was kindest if she had other ongoing health issues. Since we weren't able to aid you, I will pass your question back to customer service just now.

Kind regards,

Dr. B.
