Ask a Dog Vet and Get Answers to Your Dog Health Questions
Hi this is Dr. Hill. I need to ask a few questions to better help you and Nina. When did the nasal discharge start? Has she been coughing? Is she eating/drinking normally? Has she ever had any vaccinations? Lets start there.
okay. Thank you. Because she is young and has not had vaccines, my first differential is distemper. It is a virus that causes upper respiratory signs, like what you are describing. The other possibility is an upper respiratory infection (bacterial or parasitic). Try to keep her nares clear of discharge with a warm wet washcloth. Are her gums pink? Does she seem to be breathing normally?
If she is breathing that hard, she should be evaluated by a veterinarian this evening. I can help you find a local emergency clinic if you let me know city/stat/zip.
Would you like help finding a veterinary hospital? If you feel that she is not in distress tonight, then she should have a good physical exam tomorrow. Use a warm wet washcloth to help moisten the discharge so that she can hopefully breath more comfortably.
Great. Let me know what you find out. You can continue to post questions on this thread for a couple of days, even after rating my response. Take care.
