Customer Question

She stopped eating a few months ago. I worked with her and got her eating again but this week I noticed the right eye lid drooping. She also had low blood sugar a few moths ago and been giving small quanities of sugar water and this has re plenished the red in the gums. I was just out back with her and she was walking very careful like if her vision was distracted. She wonders the back yard going #2, She has little throw up with grass in it. She seems happy, her tail wags and she seems to rest well..... I'm concerned ......... Before all this she was happy healthe...... She also keeps licking her chops like she has a dry mouth......
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. This sounds like it might be serious. I'll let the Veterinarian know what's going on ASAP. Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about the dog?
Customer: She is a big Black Lab with just a lot of happiness in her step !!!!!! It all kinda started when we hit hot temperatures here in Phoenix,Az. I have never had a issue with my girl. She doesn't leave my house or yard ever and has a brother and sister and there fine.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. I'll address your concerns as you presented them...

Drooping lids - the top lid, at least, is called ptosis. This usually arises due to a neurologic disorder called Horner's syndrome but can also be seen with facial nerve paralysis.

Was she confirmed to be hypoglycemic by testing her blood glucose level? Supplementing with sugar water can be helpful if she were truly hypoglycemic and shocky as evidenced by pale gums. Such severe hypoglycemia as to cause shock isn't common in an adult dog, however, unless there were an insulinoma (pancreatic tumor) causing her blood glucose level to drop. She wouldn't likely be alive at this late date if that were the case.

Her walking "carefully"/visual acuity being affected/appearing as if she had a headache suggests either primary brain disorder (encephalopathy) or a metabolic disorder affecting her brain.

Her ingesting grass and then vomiting is a nonspecific and nondiagnostic symptom of gastrointestinal distress/nausea which would explain her inappetence at this time.

In summary, it would be prudent to have her vet take a look at her. I would expect a thorough physical exam including diagnostics in the form of blood and urine tests to be performed. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
