In most cases, allowing unlimited drinking water suffices. In severe cases, the cornerstone of treatment is judiciously timed reduction of serum sodium. Patients presented within 2 hours of ingestion may be decontaminated (induce emesis, no activated charcoal), and treatment aims for rapid sodium excretion/dilution. Patient presentation after > 24 hours requires careful lowering of serum sodium concentrations to avoid iatrogenic cnetral nervous system injury.
