Our little dog sometimes won't eat in the morning but today

Customer Question

Hi... Our little dog sometimes won't eat in the morning but today is different.
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. What is the dog's name and age?
Customer: He's trembling, panting, and pawing my chest Warren, he's 15, we think.
JA: What is the dog's name?
Customer: rescue.
JA: Is there anything else important you think the Veterinarian should know about rescue?
Customer: he went outside but just sat. His gums are black so I can't tell if they're pale

I was just saying he's a rescue, so we have to guess at his age. He's been with us 13 years. He's licking my face now - it just feels like he needs something and I don't know what to do. I gave him 1/4 of a TUMS this am when he had a tummy ache - he refused regular food. he got interested in our vegan sausage links soI gave him less than a tablespoon of that - two tiny bites. He seems worse now...

after eating that, I mean. He's never acted this way before. I'm nervous about it.

When I touch his belly he stops panting and looks uncomfortable.

He isn't a cuddly dog - he prefers his space usually - so coming up to me and putting his paws on my chest and licking my face is very unusual. He's laid down next to me and stopped panting now, but still looks pretty miserable.

I'm sorry that your question wasn't answered in a timely manner. Please let me know if you still need help. Unfortunately, his change in behavior is very important but it's not pathognomonic (specifically indicative) of any one particular disorder. I can understand "watchful waiting" for a full 24 hours before acting on this but I don't continue observing dogs of his age for any longer than that. He doesn't have the reserve of a much younger dog and I have to consider the more serious degenerative disorders such as chronic renal or hepatic insufficiency and age-related malignancies in a 13+ year old dog. Have any new symptoms arisen since you posted?

He's feeling much better, tail wagging, walking around, acting normally. I guess it was just a really bad stomach ache ache for him. As he ages I do worry more when he isn't well.
