My 7 yr old chocolate lab is acting odd. He hasn't eaten

Customer Question
Hi. My 7 yr old...
Hi. My 7 yr old chocolate lab is acting odd. He hasn't eaten today (dry food... and he's normally a great eater). He's very lethargic and is drooling a very thick clear drool. (He never drools) Fairly solid stool, no blood in it. He can't hold down water or food. Tried getting some Pedialite in him but he threw it up immediately. He's been outside the last 2 days more than normal. We're in Texas but it hasn't been too hot. His sister is just fine and she's with him all day every day. We gave him his Sentinel heartworm/flea prevention medication late yesterday (along with our other 3 animals) then he started these symptoms. Woke up to throw up and poop every where this morning and then we noticed the lethargic/ not eating/ drinking symptoms. Any idea if it could be dehydration/heat stroke/ medicating reaction etc? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I am sorry to hear Harley is having this problem.

Has this ever happened before after the Sentinel?

Any chance he ate anything he shouldn't have: people food, grass, toys, clothing, things outside, etc?

Never happened before. I gave him some of my steak last night. But he's had scraps before and I typically limit it to proteins. The area we have for him outside to roam is concrete and gravel so I don't think he got into anything out there
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. G., Dog Veterinarian replied 1 year ago

I see.

Given the signs I would be most worried about a reaction to the medication.

Typically dogs only get reactions to sentinel if they were on an empty stomach, however they can react to any medication at any time regardless.

Another thing I would worry about would be if he ate something outside that upset his stomach.

Your options are taking him to the vet tonight or monitoring to see if there is any improvement.

It sounds like he is pretty stable at the moment. I would not offer any food tonight. you can give 20mg of omeprazole or famotidine to help settle the stomach tonight. Offer a small amount of bland protein in the morning (like chicken breast) and if he can't keep that down, he should head to the vet. If he worsens at all tonight: profuse vomiting, blood in the vomit, bloody stool, coughing, or any other decline; he should head to the vet.

He's normally very active but he can hardly keep his head up. Throws up bile every now and then and hacks every now and then too. I've pressed on his abdomen to see if there's any pain but doesn't seem to be. Not really noticing any bloat either

OK, I'll give that a shot. Would a dog have medication reactions 24 hours later?
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. G., Dog Veterinarian replied 1 year ago

they can have reactions like that usually within about 24-48 hours. Some very quickly and some a little bit later. Depends a lot on the individual dog.

escalated symptoms should be treated as emergency, but in the state he's at now you think just monitoring? I think he wants to sleep it off...
Dog Veterinarian: Dr. G., Dog Veterinarian replied 1 year ago

Exactly. if things are getting worse, then I would take him to the vet right away. From what you are describing, he seems to be under the weather, but stable.

He probably has a really bad upset stomach regardless of what has caused it. I think some rest and an empty belly might be what he needs.
