Customer Question

my 8 week old puppy suffers from low sugar and I was putting the paste in her mouth and she was fighting and I think it went down her windpipe. She is making little snorting noises and her heart is beating more rapid than normal. What should I do?

If it went down her windpipe she would would be coughing and hacking.

It sounds like it went up into her nasal sinus. Did she sneeze?

Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 1 year ago.

You can hold her in your in your hands with her head hanging down. Have a good grip so that you don't drop her. Something may come out of her nose. Hold her like this for about three minutes.

ok we are holding her with head down

she is crying

Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 1 year ago.

I don't mean to hold her upside down. Just lay her in your hand on an angle.

Anything coming out of her nose or mouth?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

no. nothing came out

no nothing came out. she is back to snorting

sniffing

Any bubbles on her nostrils?

Are her gums nice and pink?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.

no bubbles and her gums are pink

Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 1 year ago.

Good. The nasal sinus drains into the throat and down the esophagus.

So if anything is in there it will go down by itself.

It may a few hours for it to drain. She should be getting better all the time.

If it gets worse put her head down again.

If her gums turn blue she would need immediate attention at an emergency clinic.

You will have to watch her until she is back to normal.

Is she feeling better than when you contacted us?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
no she is about the same It happened about 2 hours ago now and she is still aliveso does that mean she is going to be ok? She wants to go to sleep. Is that ok? She is a tea cup Chi. 1 pound. Her sugar dropped last week and she became comatose. We nearly lost her. She is fairly normal from that horrible occurrence. and now this happened.
Customer: replied 1 year ago.
are you there?
Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 1 year ago.

Yes, let her sleep. She should get better through the night.

Then give her the paste in the morning.

But if she turns blue that is an emergency. But I don't expect that.

Expert:  Dr Marta Lepes replied 1 year ago.

And of course keep her warm.

I usually log off about now. But I will check with you in a half hour. OK?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
ok we already do that.
