He had anal gland surgery about a month ago. About an hour

Customer Question

He had anal gland surgery about a month ago. About an hour ago. I noticed a boil in his butt. When I placed a warm compress it ruptured and it was a mixture of blood and puss. Is that bad? Should I take home to the vet NOW?
JA: I'm sorry to hear that. Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about the dog?
Customer: He is ten year old chihuahua. Otherwise healthy.
JA: What is the dog's name?
Customer: Popeye

I am sorry to hear about this concern for Popeye. Well, I don't know what surgery was performed, but it sounds a lot like a ruptured anal gland. So, he very well may need some type of repeat surgery performed, antibiotics, and a good anti-inflammatory medication.

If it is not continuing to actively bleed and he is leaving it alone and can sleep, you could try to wait until morning for evaluation. But, if he seems painful, agitated or it is actively bleeding, I would go sooner.

Hope that information helps
