Ask a Dog Vet and Get Answers to Your Dog Health Questions
Hi this is Dr Gabby. Do you know what the medicine was? Did you call the breeder and tell them? Has he had any new foods or treats since you got him?
Never mind. Just read he throws up all water.
So if he can not keep water down he is going to dehydrate very quickly.
You will not be able to keep up with his fluid loss with oral rehydration like children's pedialyte drink.
He needs to see a vet today for hydration as well as medication to stop the vomiting and diarrhea.
When a dog is vomiting and not keeping water down or fluids down then it will not do any good to give over the counter oral medication as he will just vomit it back up.
You should be able to find an open vet clinic if you try right now.
Most close 5-6:00 on weekdays.
Otherwise the emergency clinic is open 24/7.
So I think he does need to see a vet today as he can not be treated with over the counter medications as he will just vomit it back up.
Ok if he can not keep water down do not give chicken as that will come right back up.
See if you have some honey, pancake syrup, or karo syrup on hand. Rub some on his gums to help keep his blood sugar up.
Only let him drink small amounts of water as if he drinks too much as once he will vomit it back up.
For future reference dogs can take human Pepcid AC or Pepto bismol to settle their stomachs.
The reason I did not recommend that is because if he is vomiting up water he will vomit the pepcid or the pepto right back up.
But yes, chicken and rice makes a good bland diet to feed him once he has stopped vomiting.
