Chihuahua, treated and cured heartworms, dog rescue, 3

Customer Question

Hi, Chihuahua, treated and cured heartworms, dog rescue, 3 herniated discs and rear knee broken and not treated for osteomyelitis. Bladder/stones removed and not present in xray. three weeks ago normal bowel, on vet diet, and then mucus with drop of blood. Flagyl given, perhaps not a complete treatment. now some normal movements, and a small mucus/blood dropping. she is incontinent, she gets around. Could she have additional worm microscopic or parasite present in bowel..Would Doxycycline work to kill flat worm etc. Thank you Dr. Bruce.

HI. Welcome to Just Answer. Thank you for your question. This little girl has been through a lot! Do you feel that she may be getting any new treats or foods or eating something that is new for her that may be causing some intestinal upset? The reason I ask this is that one of the most common causes for mucus stools with some blood in it is colitis from eating something that just didn't agree with their intestinal tract. This could be a table scrap, a new treat, etc.. While intestinal parasites can cause things like this (giardia being the more common one), they typically aren't as common as just eating something that upsets things.
