Customer Question

My bull mastiff acts like she has a cold or allergies. She has gooey eyes and she had a cough. The cough is almost gone she still has gooey eyes, she also will breath heavy. She has been eating and drinking and going to the bathroom normal. Today is the first day she is barely eating, Is there anything I can do at home?

Sam, respiratory infection is more likely than allergy when appetite wanes and because it has and she's breathing heavily, I want Bella's chest to be X-rayed. Most respiratory infections in dogs are self-limiting within 1-3 weeks. When my patient doesn't progressively improve within the first week, I'm concerned that lower respiratory infection in the form of pneumonia or pleuritis has arisen. This isn't something you can address at home.

Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

Do you suggest an emergency call now or wait until the morning?

Sounds good. I'm pleased to hear that she'll be attended to soon. To determine how urgently that needs to be done, please assess her respiratory rate while she's asleep or at rest. She should be taking less than 30 breaths/minute. Let me know what you find, please.

The heavy breathing just started before I went to work this morning. It's more than 30 but she moved to her side and it looks like she started breathing heavier.

She's worrying me. The sooner she can be seen the better.
