Customer Question

Both my dogs front carpal pads are swollen. She recently finished chemo - and this symptom came on at the end of chemo. Could it be related to the chemo?

Yes, it could be related to the chemo. The footpads are a target for adverse drug reactions. Autoimmune diseases should also be a consideration because they're overrepresented whenever footpads inflame and systemic malignancies (hemangiosarcoma, e.g.) are known to cause autoimmune diseases such as the pemphigus complex, systemic lupus erythematosus, and vasculitis. As long as she's otherwise normal, "watchful waiting" is appropriate and her vet needs to be apprised. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.
