Customer Question

My dog has had one black poop, but is still active and eating. I see her poop everyday and this is the first one. Should I wait for another poop before I take her to the vet?

Please be patient with Lily. In an otherwise normal dog, such dark poop may simply indicate a transient slowing of the motility of her gastrointestinal tract. This allows the bacteria in the GI tract more time to work on the bilirubin excreted in her bile. Bilirubin is metabolized into stercobilinogen which gives stool the characteristic brown color. The more stercobilinogen, the darker the stool. Black poop doesn't necessarily indicate the presence of digested blood. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish.

I'm just following up on our conversation about Lily. How is everything going?
