Large 11 year old mutt with weight loss despite increased

Customer Question

Large 11 year old mutt with weight loss despite increased insatiable appetite. Increased thirst and urination. Dog acts fine. Heartworm negative. Stool neg for O&P. Proteinuria despite low SG. Sounds like diabetes but Blood glucose normal! I think I am now noting some abdominal distention (soft not painful). What test to do next?

This is Dr. KV.

The best next tests to do would be xrays of Haandi's belly or even better, an ultrasound of his belly. This will allow your vet to check for tumors and see what his organs look like.

How long has Haandi had these symptoms?

Customer: replied 1 year ago.
He has always had an exceptional appetite. He was 72 lbs last week so since his last vet visit 7 months ago so he had lost 8 lbs--and that is with increased amount of food. But at one time he was a healthy 84 lbs. The increase in appetite and polydipsia--maybe a month . We have again increased amount of food this last week and just last few days I am noting his belly. a few weeks ago I started giving him puppy food figuring he needs extra calories. Could that be making it worse?

Puppy food is fine as long as you are not seeing any stomach upset. It does contain more fat so we have to be careful giving it to dogs with sensitive stomachs.

It sounds like he is losing too much weight in a short period of time.

At Haandi's age, there can be many issues which could cause weight loss and polydipsia. I think the best thing for him at this point is imaging of his belly, especially since it sounds like he may be developing fluid in his belly.

despite an obsession for food. Ok, an US is not a big deal to do. Thanks!
