My dog is 14 and was sleeping and started breathing hard and fast. When I petted her she slowed down some but is still breathing faster than normal. what should I do

At this age, you must proceed very carefully. Any type of accelerated or labored breathing would constitute a emergency, because we don't know if its related to heart disease, a primary lung problem, possible nausea, or even a recent seizure. It's a very wide list to consider, but all very serious.

Unfortunately, we have no way to treat her at home under these circumstances. If any fast breathing persists for another 1/2 hour or if she gets worse, you'll want to get to a vet this evening.
