Customer Question

Hi I have a 15 lb Jack Russel terrier with indigestion. I was advised by vet to give her Pepto Bismol. I had given her a little liquid before and it worked, but tonight I gave her 1/2 a tablet instead but later read it should be 1/4 tablet for dog under 20 lbs. I called emergency vet and they suggested I contact poison control because they do not advocate Pepto Bismol dir pets. Should I be concerned? What should I watch for?

Thank you for your question, I'm Dr. Dan and I'll try to help you.

I agree with the emergency vet in that I don't advocate pepto bismol either, but a single "heavy" dose of pepto bismol shouldn't cause a problem unless you give it multiple times daily for several days. What you should look for is repeated vomiting of a blackish tar like material or refusal to eat. Like I said a single dose will not likely be a big deal. In the future ask your vet about using antacids like pepcid or zantac which are much safer and usually more effective. I hope this helps, if not please feel free to ask more questions, if it did help please leave a rating. Dr. Dan
