Hello & welcome, I am Dr. B, a licensed veterinarian and I would like to help you today. First, I would note that Furosemide discontinuation doesn't require weaning down as we would need to with steroids. Therefore, if the treatment is no longer needed, it can just be stopped.Otherwise, in regards ***** ***** question on drug tolerance, there are two proposed routes on how this happens. This first is that long term use can activate the sympathetic nervous system leading to a reduction nerve receptors available to "listen" to what the drug is telling the body to do. As well, that long term use leads to desensitization of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (the system that tells the kidneys to reabsorb or pass urine as fluid). And together this would lead to the body becoming less responsive to a dose over time and why we do need to increase the dose for some cases as we treat. Please take care,Dr. B.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------If you have any other questions, please ask me – I’ll be happy to respond. **Afterwards, I would be grateful if you would rate my service by clicking on the "Rate my Expert' button at the top of the page as this is the only way I am credited for helping you.
