8 week old puppy, mostly chihuahua. Looking at pictures online

Customer Question

8 week old puppy, mostly chihuahua. Looking at pictures online it is a very small variety. it appears to only be developed into about the 4th week, though, to me. He has extremely bad breathing problems. He will go into seizures when feeding. He uses the bathroom regularly. What can I do?

Hi. Welcome to Just Answer. My name is***** I'm sorry to hear about Chip's situation. This sounds pretty serious. In a young dog like him, who's not well developed and having neurologic issues after a feeding, a liver shunt would be a very strong possibility. Could there be some other congenital issue that may be going on to cause possible neurologic events? Some can have hydrocephalus that may cause seizures but they shouldn't particularly be associated with feedings. The abnormal behavior after a feeding is again a looked for sign to indicate the possibility of a liver shunt. What I'd recommend here is trying to video what you're seeing and take him to your vet so they can evaluate him. They can do some blood work to see if a shunt is present. If one is, they can then go over surgical vs. medical management.
