Customer Question

Can dogs take Melatonin. My dog gets extremely anxious when going to the groomers or just riding in a car.

Yes, anecdotal dosing ranges between 3-12 mg daily. It's unlikely that you'll see significant anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) activity with melatonin, however. It has been used for the treatment of sleep cycle disorders, cognitive dysfunction syndrome, phobias and separation anxiety, however. In general, I'll prescribe more potent psychotherapeutic drugs when anxiety alters my patient's quality of life. Ask her vet about prescribing a quick acting benzodiazepine such as alprazolam (Xanax) which can be administered an hour before its desired effect. Please respond with further questions or concerns if you wish, Ilene.
