Hello and this is Dr. Holloway but you can call me Dr. H and I am a licensed veterinarian. I understand you have concerns about your pet possibly being constipated (dried feces with difficulty pooping) or obstipated (cannot pass feces at all). I can help you find out if your pet is either. Give me just a few minutes to type up your response. : )

So with constipation your pet would basically take a longer time to defecate than normal. So most pets will squat and within 30 seconds can evacuate their colon. However if your pet is squatting for longer periods of time (longer than 1 minute or so) then this is an indication that she is straining. You can also often see irritation around the rectum if this continues to happen because the overly dry feces will cause abrasions to the sensitive rectal tissue. Now with obstipation pets will just not go. Period. They will try to go and nothing or very small liquid will come out and no stool is produced for days on end. So which if any is your pet displaying right now? When was the last time she had a bowel movement?- Dr. H

is there any thing I can give her to help her go
Expert:  Drhollowayvet replied 1 year ago.
That depends on if she is constipated or obstipated. We differentiate the 2 because they both have to be treated differently. Which one is she so I can tailor the answer to best help your pet?
